Dlee, there are also other problems with the esophagus where it goes into a spasm (feels just like a heart attack!). Mine is due to GERD and a Sliding Hiatal Hernia. When it hits, I take nitro, which usually knocks it back. I'm on 3 different medications, and am having an EGD in a couple of weeks with some other studies. We'll probably decide at that time if it's time to have surgery on my lower esophageal sphincter (from the esophagus to the stomach) to tighten up the sphincter pressure to keep acid and bile down in my stomach.
One thing you can do is lift the head of your bed up 4-6 inches to try to keep your stomach contents in your stomach(think blocks under the head of the bed frame). I've been suffering this for over a decade and am now just about ready for surgery. Cardiac has already been ruled out as a cause of the pain, and that's fine!
Hope this helps - hugs and prayers!

I have a wedge pillow I use that props my head that helps a lot. I also sit in a recliner so I have a position that helps. I also do not eat much at any one time to keep any Gerd as much as possible. Thank you for all the help. I have mitral valve prolapse. They told me this is causing the chest pain I have. Nitro does nothing for me. Best wishes for your surgery and pray all goes well. Hugs and prayers.

I am not sure I am going to get surgery right now. They say eventually I will need it but it is not a have to at this point. I have been telling them for years something is wrong and they tell me last week "we have a problem". I have a lot of problems but when they told me about this I said I told you Nexium does not work, I cannot eat much food at a time, I cannot eat anything but cold food or only very slightly warm food. I can only eat certain foods and I have what they think is ibs and the list goes on. I have had this problem for many years and have described everything they told me.. and yet they somehow did not know what this was for all this time with all the tests and all the many doctors. I feel like I should have said I told you so! I have never heard it called this but have heard of something similar. I have been through so many barium tests that I refused to do any more. What all do you go through MusicMan until they decided what you really have wrong? It scares me when you say your third surgery on your esophagus in one year! I have mixed connective tissue disease and Lupus Sle and many other autoimmune disease such as CREST etc. My body hates anything invasive such as a splinter. The corpectomy was seven months to even get to starting calling it a time to finally be in recovery. Are you worried about the surgery and what did they do in each surgery if you do not mind me asking? If I had anything done I would have to go to a specialist and the closest is in Baltimore which is at least 2 hours away. I will not have anything done here. I almost died here on the operating table and my husband has MRSA from this place. They just tore out a surgical center in our medical center because of MRSA. I do not need this on top of the incompetency of all of the so called experts here. I am anxious to hear if you do not mind telling me what they have done in the first two surgeries and what they are going to do this month during your third surgery? Thank you in advance.
