Choosing A Pain Doctor, What Questions Do/would You Ask To Qualify That Doctor?
A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was lucky and my first Pain Doctor was a master. Her skills were at instructor level. Now she is retiring, can't blame her but now must replace her. I had four other doctors treat me as she was on holidays or on course over the four years. I was pushed to doctor number four because he works Fridays when I have the best chance of getting the car. Deb was probably up Thursday night doing a brochure, will print it Friday afternoon to drop off to her client for their weekend

For me among the most important questions were just what his training was in areas of nutrition regarding pain and its affects and just how much he believe in 'drugs' to solve every issue? In my time there have been a lot of pill pushers whose pills didn't do a thing! And so those were among the first of my questions. Also, how open they were to other methods or alternatives to pain management as something new is always coming up and so those doctors need to keep educating and reeducating themselves as to what is possible and what is working. Good luck to all of us with our PM as we are all unique.

In my area which is around the Virginia and North Carolina border it is not a question of who will accept you and who won't. My shrink had taken over my chronic pain up until a little over a year ago. He was good enough to continue to provide pain meds until we found someone. Two refused me. In one case because he was a concierge doctor who charge a membership fee, more then insurance allowed and wanted cash at each visit. Not for my lack of income level. What an ass! The second one, he called to start then I called, read my records from all of my docs and read my drug profile with the VA Board of Pharmacy. They agreed to accept me but it would take 6 monthes for me to get an appointment. My shrink wrote scripts to keep me from withdrawal until I could see them. Luckily, we hit it off with one head butt, but it worked out and I am happy with them. I have no problem with the drug tests and our one head bump was a snotty nurse giving me less then 24 hours to bring my meds in for a pill count. I found out that she was supposed to have given me 48 hours. Since then we are in agreement. I see the PA, like her, and will see her tomorrow.

I would want to know what new treatments would they consider up and coming. This would tell me if they are stuck in one thing or if they stay on top of advances. I would also ask what they think of herbal remedies. By this i would hope they are at least open minded. Should they simply dismiss these i would be skeptical

If he/she specialised in my pain issues, I'don't mentally gauge how sympathetic I felt them to be & how helpful they were!

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member my heart breaks for you being in this situation. I do understand your frustration + the US doctors basically putting a freeze on any Opiodes that most of us are using just to get us through the day.
I live in Canada and I find that the even doctors up here have also started cutting patients other medications for the pain instead of the Opiodes. I myself have been on Oxycocet for over 20 years, which I know is totally wrong, but guess what - every doctor, be it family or specialist, that I’ve ever had just wrote the prescriptions freely - especially my last GP. I no longer have him as a doctor since he accused me 3 - yes 3 times of selling my drugs! I have reported him to the Board of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario for these accusations + I also found out just before I fired his ass that he is getting a kickback with a number of the drug companies! I so want him to loose his doctor’s license!
After a stay in the hospital back in March I asked my RA Specialist what he thought about using CBD marijuana oil to help me with my pain, and his response had me in shock. I really didn’t think that he would like the idea, since the chemical marijuana he gave me didn’t do a darn thing for my pain. He told me that he would most certainly give the referral to the Canadian Cannibus Clinic close to me with a promise from me that I would try to ween myself off the Oxycocet. So I agreed, but just after that I had a fall and was not able to keep my promise at that time. But in June I went to the Cannibus Clinic & on June 22nd I started the oil. I’ve been slowly increasing the amount that I’m taking .... I started with 0.1 ml and am now only up to 0.5 ml three times a day. I’ll be going for my follow up appointment in a couple of weeks and at that time I’ll be getting a prescription for the THC/CBD Oil mixture to help me sleep finally.
Nikki please don’t give up ..... there is help out there for you, to help get you the medications you need to help you with this extreme pain that you are in. Nikki even if you have to go to the emergency department of the hospital to get some relief of the pain, and the re gives you a prescription, please just don’t give up. We are all here to support each other and that is why we are reaching out to you.
