Usually they will give you a long lasting form of pain medicine and a quick acting pain med for peak pain. It’s all about dosage but diluadid is stronger than oxycodone. There used to be a long lasting dilaudid med called Opana. The manufacturer had problems and they quit making it. Personally I believe that methadone is the best long term pain med and hydromorphone(dilaudid) worked best for me as a peak pain medicine. The methadone keeps you from riding the pain roller coaster. The pain roller coaster is when your pain med doesn’t last long and you’re always trying to get control of your pain.

I use prescribed dilaudid (Hydromorphone) 2 x day plus breakthrough up to 3 times a day. If I think the hydromorphone breakthrough 5 mg will be too much I take t1s over the counter. I confirmed this is ok with both my dr and my pharmacist.
