Insomnia

A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have insomnia because of my pain. I don't know what to do. I have tried aromatherapy and relaxation techniques but they don't help. I don't want to take sleeping pills because I'm afraid of getting addicted to them. Any ideas? Please help!!!

Members rallied around someone struggling with pain-related insomnia, offering a wide range of natural remedies and personal experiences to avoid the fear of sleeping pill addiction. Several members recommended supplements like valerian root (noting it has a strong smell), melatonin, GABA, magnesium, chamomile, and CBD oil, with many sharing specific dosages and timing strategies that helped them transition off prescription sleep aids like trazodone. A recurring theme was the acknowledgment that serious pain often overpowers sleep aids, leading members to also suggest meditation, warm milk with honey, sleep stories, muscle relaxers, and consulting pain clinics for non-addictive options like Silenor or Lunesta paired with timing strategies such as waiting to feel tired before bed.

Hello I was referred by my doctor to the Chronic Pain Clinic at the hospital a few years ago as I had dreadful back pain after several heavy falls. As part of my assessment I saw the Psychologist expert who recommended that I don’t go to bed at night until I started to Yawn as (I was going to bed because of the pain)

My doctor also prescribed BACLOFEN for my back pain to take at night and Celebrex in the mornings (both medications taken as needed)! It has helped me a lot!

I get Valerian root at Bimart. It is behind the counter in the pharmacy. It only costs less than $5.00.
I have found melatonin in most stores I've been in.

You can find everything on line too.
Another place I get low cost, quality herbs is from Swanson. They have been in business for most of my 60 years.

Magnesium citrate 40mg
GABA 180mg
L-theanine 120mg

I take one one capsule of this complex

About six hours before bed, I take melatonin 10mg

This mix got me off of Trazadone. It is an antidepressant that in a lower dose helps you sleep.

My grandma drank warm milk and honey when she couldn’t sleep. I do it and it’s helped me. Also try melatonin. It’s all natural and no addiction.
