A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

We are traveling this winter and will require to have our opioid prescriptions filled in Florida....is this possible in Florida?

Thank you for your input!

You would love Virginia. Found an ideal Pain Mgmt doctor but it took 3 months to be seen. Virginia has the 4 seasons and i love that. Florida was plain ole hot all the time and if you werent feeling good, the heat made you feel worse. Also you couldnt fill a prescription for oxycodone years ago so when i decided to move back to virginia, cvs filled my script from a florida doc as they saw in the computer i was going to a cvs for years so not a problem like i thougjt i would have. Hope everyone has a painfree day soon.

I was living in florida 9 years ago and they had banned all oxycodone in South Florida due to pill mills and the pharmacies getting robbed for oxycodone and people were getting shot and killed. It was horrible. I picked up my chowenie and hauled my behind back to good ole Virgineee quick as it was extremely dangerous as no one could fill their oxycodone scripts and were suffering from withdrawals or if they could, they were charged $1500.00 per prescription, resulting in mass chaos w patients. I couldnt wait to leave and will never go back to South Florida😣

This was a really long time ago but my uncle owns a diesel and marine shop in Ft. Lauderdale and I went down there do redo his whole computer network and install 2 servers. It was a big job tbh. I was prescribed 280 norco's /mo. at the time. I ran out (because the script naturally ran out not because of abuse) and I thought my Dr. was going to be able to just call in a script at a pharmacy and I'd be all set (I was a bit naive and new to prescriptions at the time...) so yea I ran into a real difficult situation. I got way lucky though - went to an E.R. and they refilled my prescriptions with just a lower dose but it was more than manageable.

This probably doesn't really help your situation... But if I had to guess with the recent climate out there about pain medications if you can call ahead and prepare as best as you possibly can they should have some sort of plan to help you out. How long are you going to be in FL? If it's less than 3 months I bet they can get you linked up with a Dr. down there that could get your file and be prepared for your visit. From my experience though, going to Austin, TX, SF, Toronto and Ft. Lauderdale (all to do networking work, those were the days...), they all have different ways they treat this stuff and it's all up to how well you prepare.

Sometimes like with Austin it didn't matter at all how well I prepared.. I was screwed and that was it no matter how many name drops I had or call logs etc. Had to drive all the way back home in at least stage 3 withdrawal which was incredibly dangerous... Please prepare as much as possible is my biggest advice and hopefully you can use your current Dr. to help make that all happen.

I go camping in summer and it's not out of state but it's not in my town. We go their usually for a week in the summer and so happens my meds we're due at that time. So what I did was talked to my Dr. Let him know and I got permission. Then I let my pharmacy /pharmacist know what was up. Got my script went to a CVS in a target and told them as well and got it filled. Now I am not from Florida and it wasn't a different state but different town. Just a suggestion on maybe how to do it. Maybe since a different state maybe get a letter ok it from your doctor.

I don’t know the answer but my friend from Florida comes to Michigan for the summer and they fill her prescriptions at the CVS in Michigan, that is in target. She gets her prescriptions filled at CVS in Florida. They are all connected thru the computer. So they log in and see what she gets filled thru CVS.
