Constipation With Narcotics
A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I would welcome any suggestions to deal with constipation. Before I used to take 40 mg of Oxycocet and my body could handle that. Now I am taking 6 mg of Hydromorphone twice per day. Today I took some Lactulose, but I am still waiting for it to take effect, it is a strong laxative, that a Doctor should know that you are taking, but it takes a while to work.
I don't want to take laxatives regularly, so any suggestions are welcome.
Thanking everyone for their assistance, in advance.

A stool softener with Senna can make a difference when nothing else works. I find that I have this battle all the time because of the meds. I drink lots of water, don't forget to take electrolytes too (Gatorade etc) and eat a high fibre diet, probiotics, chia seed pudding helps too.

Probiotics are great for keeping you regular. Get a good quality one. Yogurt is full of sugar and not the same.

Try maralax. Twice a day until there is a movement. Then take a bowl soften at night while you are on your medication. I take two daily. You know your body you can decide what works for you.

Diluting prune juice helps but means you need to drink more for effect. Sometimes ground flax helps.

My GI doctor gave me Linzess. It hasn't worked for me. I've tried diet changes, probiotics, anything natural is best but I think I have run out of options there. I will ask my pain doctor for a drug specific to OIC. (Opiate Induced Constipation.) I'll post when I find out if it works.😁
