It took me a while to understand why this was so upsetting. Before I had extreme chronic pain, I did a lot of these things. I owned animals, loved to volunteer, did community hobbies after work, etc. But chronic pain made all that crumple. The inability to use my body made volunteer work next to impossible, the additional research burden of figuring out how to survive/healthcare on top of attempting to work meant I had no time for additional 'fun' as I was about to collapse each night and… read more

Same. I don’t volunteer I don’t have a pet to help feel comfortable I have my family but they can only hear so much everyday. I have a therapist ans a psychologist which helps me talk it out and cry I feed my ducks and geese and watch from my window or take pictures and that makes me happy. But the articles aren’t shaming at least not to me bc I know I can’t do them but it helps to learn and read how people see us with the pain and it’s very hard some days im ok others I’m a mess now dealing with rheumatoid arthritis stress anxiety depression ptsd all from chronic pain. It’s just ideas nothing more this page is just to help get a better understanding I see it as positive bc what else can you do. No one is perfect that’s why on here we can talk to eachother take advice or don’t know one should judge what we can or can not do. I have been through too much and trying to accept it everyday especially with a daughter who’s 13 it’s frustrating it’s sad but not giving up is enough to show that we can handle it in our own ways and I’m just getting started knowing it’s ok and it’s ok to say no or to not say I’m sorry we are all here for everyone and those articles can be shown to loved ones so they understand or can try and help. I know it’s frustrating believe me I don’t know how I’m doing it but just take one day at a time that’s all we can do. 🙏🏻❤️

Anita, while all of us here at My Chronic Pain Team suffer with chronic pain, we all suffer with different issues, and at different levels. Some may be more able to function while others are totally incapacitated. Not everyone will be able to do the 5 suggestions, but some may be able to do 1 of them. Even in my life of Chronic Pain of 24 years, I have good days, and horrible days, although I always have varying levels of pain daily. At this point I probably wouldn't choose to volunteer, although I do care for my mother's needs when I can (she's at a care center). If I feel up to it I will lead worship at church. Sometimes I'm scheduled, and then I can't. I can not dedicate myself fully. I have a Chihuahua, although it is hard sometimes, she brings me more comfort, love and companionship which helps me a lot.
I read everyday, and when I am in pain I play a word game on my phone which helps to keep my mind busy.
So I just feel these are suggestions or ideas for people, if it's something they can do. Some may be able to do all, one, or none.
