Question About An MRI
A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

I went to the doc the other day i wanted to get an MRI on my lower back the doc told me that i have to have an x-ray first (which i understand that) then she said i needed to take 6 weeks of physical therapy then i could get an mri i have cervical stenosis and myelopathy. Is it standard to have physical therapy before getting an mri

Physical therapy is one way to try and get ahead of the pain and to see what your tolerance is. Sometimes just working those muscle groups and or areas of pain with a exercise routine can be very beneficial. It’s one more way for your doctor to try and help with pain management.

It’s true 😞 unfortunately most things just won’t show up on an X-ray but insurance companies want it done first before an MRI can be ordered. Hang in there!

They have different protocols and they’re using them more these days. It also depends on what you’ve had done before. If you try physical therapy and it’s too painful I’m sure they would then do the MRI right away!

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member, your insurance may not have same rules. It is very plan specific and insurance specific.

@A MyChronicPainTeam Member, in this situation, the new Dr won't help. Many insurances have a hierarchy of tests in an order they must be done or insurance won't pay. The Dr may know that he needs a certain test. The X-ray won't tell him what he needs to know, but the insurance will not pay for the other test unless you take the X-ray first. It is crazy because it ends up costing more money. Maybe they figure you will give up and they won't have to pay for the MRI. However, in order to get insurance to pay, the X-ray must be done first.
