Talk to your Dr. In many states, you can have a mental support animal. I was able to get my cat into one apartment for no extra rent or pet deposit with a letter from my Dr.

In NY, the land lord has to let therapy pets in, but does not have to rent to you, so get the apt first, then tell him you have a therapy pet. It only takes a letter from one of your physicians to qualify your pet for a lease. It is different to qualify the pet for the airlines...

If you get a letter from your dr and have a support animal. They legally can't turn you away. At least that's what a friend of mine found out with her cats as emotional support animals. She got a drs letter and the landlord allowed her in, no issues

Under the ADA, if you have a registered Emotional Support Pet/Service Animal and a letter from your doc or psych. professional, they have to let you have it. Moreover, they cant charge a pet rent or deposit, as this would be prohibitive.
