Outpatient Total Knee?
A MyChronicPainTeam Member asked a question 💭

One of my wife's friends just underwent a total knee replacement, and it was an “in by ten, out by six” outpatient procedure. I spent three days in the hospital about seven years ago after mine; my wife was in for a week (but she has comorbidities and they have to watch for infection). But 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵? I can not imagine it. Does anyone have experience? I’m probably looking at another replacement this year.

Yes my neighbor did. Home health care came in to help.

My friend had a total knee replacement in 2019. She also recouped on an outpatient basis. I stayed at her house the first week that she was home. She recovered quickly.

Thank you! I had my right knee replaced ~6 years ago, spent two nights in the hospital followed by two weeks of intensive PT/OT at a very good facility. That knee malfunctions and has become laterally unstable, while my left “factory installed” knee has been bone-on-bone and learning new tricks every day. Add to that a faulty shoulder replacement that has fallen out of joint since its installation (Doc misthreaded a tendon!), and I’m looking at three surgeries. Yuck. Thanks so much again for sharing the state of the science!

I just had total knee replacement last Aug. I spent the night and home next day. Only reason spent night was to get pin under control better…figure out what pain meds to go home with. I had a caregiver for 2 mos as I live alone. I started home physical therapy two days after I got home. It was a long recovery…lot of therapy and exercises you have to do religiously to get knee flexion and extension. It takes time for nerves to regenerate too. I’m glad I did it as I’m finally able to walk without a cane. Knee stable and won’t give out anymore. I’ll need to do other knee n couple years.

About ten years ago, my gall bladder went necrotic inside me and burst, filling my abdomen with all kinds of ick (medical term). Five hours in surgery with three surgeons later, they had cut out what was once a gall bladder and pulled my innards out for a rinse. That hurt.
