Overview
Elavil was a prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat depression. Elavil was thought to also help manage neuropathic pain. Elavil was also known by its drug name, amitriptyline. 

Elavil was a tricyclic antidepressant. Elavil was believed to work by changing the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Elavil was generally taken once or twice a day. Elavil came in tablet form.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Elavil listed common side effects including drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Elavil also could cause weight gain, constipation, trouble urinating, and blurred vision.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Elavil included worsening depression and suicidal thoughts.
